5 Safe Human Foods for Pets

Feeding cats and dogs can be a difficult task. A wide range of human food that produces no side effects for us can be linked to pet toxicity, obesity, allergies, and more in our furry friends. That being said, there are some food items that can be beneficial to your pet’s health. But what’s safe to feed your pet in moderation? Let’s take a closer look at five human foods that you can incorporate into your pet’s diet or offer as a treat:

1. Cucumber

Cucumbers are a perfect snack for humans as well as dogs and cats. They’re refreshing, fun to eat, and super hydrating on hot days. More importantly, they contain magnesium, vitamin K, potassium, and vitamin C. You can make these easy to eat for your pet by slicing them into thin disks or even chopping them up into cubes that you can then feed to them directly.

2. Broccoli

Humans aren’t the only ones who can eat broccoli. Cats and dogs might love it too. It’s a wonderful source of both fiber and vitamin C. However, it can cause minor stomach upset in some dogs. Make sure to only feed your pet this vegetable in moderation. Additionally, avoid feeding your pets the large stems when preparing it for them.

3. Fish

For feline owners, feeding your cat fish is nothing new. However, it might not be just cats who benefit from this tasty food. Much like our previous suggestion, they offer omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and vitamin D. Incorporating more fishy food into your dog or cat’s diet can offer a wide range of benefits like improved cognitive function, defense against arthritis, and even support for cardiovascular health. Two great choices to give pets include salmon and tuna. Make sure you double-check for, and remove, any bones when preparing it for them.

4. Skinless chicken

Both dogs and cats eat protein. In fact, you’re likely to find chicken in some of the canned foods or dry foods that you already give your pet. Keep in mind that raw chicken could give your dog or cat salmonella. But cooked, skinless, and boneless chicken in moderation can be a great way to give your pet their daily dose of protein. Mix some shreds or chunks into their food or give it to them as a treat for good behavior.

5. Eggs

Raw eggs can cause salmonella, but cooked ones can be a wonderful way to help your pet get all of the protein, omega-3s, and vitamins that they need. Boiling them can be an efficient way to give your pet a snack. However, you can also feed them to your pet scrambled for much smaller portions. Just make sure to avoid the seasonings and additives that you might include in your own egg dishes.

We tend to think of human food as all bad for animals. In many cases, this is true. However, there are other foods that satisfy your pet’s daily nutritional needs. Try giving your dog or cat some of the foods above to see how they react. As long as the food is prepared right and lacks any added oils, salt, and spices, they should enjoy these treats in moderation.
